Brooke continues to lead the WSS but tyres decide feature result.
The Mountain Dew Ice Speedway at Latrobe hosted last Saturday night’s second Tasmanian round of the World Series Sprintcars championship and with Brooke Tatnell going into the round 7 shoot out leading the tournament, the Toyota Genuine Parts team were confident in another successful night and holding onto the series points lead going into the pre Christmas break. Tyre selection played a big part in the feature but Brooke still “gassed it up” picking up a sensational second placing.
Brooke showed that he certainly means business and with some of Australia’s best and American drivers chasing the WSS crown, the Aussie #1 Cool set quick time in qualifying with a commanding 11.509 second lap. Brooke and the guys had really picked up their race program against the strong field.
Starting back in the pack for both his heat races, Brooke forged forward picking up a second and fifth placing but after starting in second position in his Dash race, Brooke didn’t have the inside line and was beaten off line by American ace Jason Johnson. Unfortunately Brooke had to settle for second position finishing the Dash race behind the American visitor.
Coming from position 3 in the A Main feature, Brooke quickly moved into second position but with the track laying rubber, the Toyota Genuine Parts, Maxwill Engines Cool team had fitted a harder compound tyre and factor which would determine Brooke’s result in the feature race. During the second part of the race, Brooke started to moved onto Jason Johnson’s lead but a red light stoppage caused his tyres to cool really ending the Australian champ’s charge. Brooke tried to go around Johnson at the restart but decided it “play it smart” not wanting to maybe take them both out and settled into a still superb second position finishing behind the American in round 7.
“I’m happy with the result, we just picked the wrong tyre. Our car was fast at the end but the results don’t really show that! It’s a short break then off to Speedweek and I really enjoy the seven nights of racing in 10 days.”
Brooke holds onto his points lead for the 2007/8 WSS championship with 1146 with a 30 point lead over second placed Max Dumesny.
It’s the Christmas break so it’s a week off for Brooke Tatnell and the Toyota Genuine Parts Maxwell Engines Cool team. The racing action returns on Boxing Day when they hit Speedway City Adelaide for round 9 of the 2007/8 WSS tournament.
